How To Become The World's Smartest Carpet Buyer
There are two ways a you can get a carpet buying education:
1. After you have made your purchase.
2. Before you make your purchase.
Your first choice is to just walk into a carpet store, look at a few samples and make your purchase. Then the carpet is installed in your home and you soon find out whether or not you made a mistake.
Your second choice is to learn something about carpet before you buy. Then you will be a smart shopper and much more likely to buy the perfect carpet that will give you years of beautiful service.
Here's Your Carpet Education
Before you buy carpet you have a few things to consider and some choices that should be made very carefully. A quick look in a carpet store will tell you that it is available in many different colors and styles, textures and fibers.
Furthermore, in each of those categories there are many different qualities from which you must choose.
Sales figures show that the two most popular carpet choices are loop pile and cut pile. Here's an explanation of the two:
Loop pile has individual strands of yarn pulled through the backing to form small loops.
Cut pile construction has that loop cut at the top. Cutting the loop produces tufts of yarn that stand straight up on the surface of the carpet. Cut pile is usually longer wearing than looped pile.
Cut pile carpeting comes in many styles, such as shag, textured, Saxony, and velvet.
Popular loop pile carpet choices are Berber, cable, or sisal. Experts recommend loop pile for high traffic areas.
Chances are you don't have an unlimited carpet buying budget. It is important to not only find the carpet that is perfect for you home, but one that you can afford. Don't worry; you will have a wonderful array of carpet choices in all prices ranges.
Wool carpeting is at the top of most lists of fine carpet. It's truly a luxurious choice, but it will be the most expensive carpet.
An important factor in choosing your carpet is the cost. Even though there is nothing more luxurious than having wool carpeting in your home, most of us can't afford wool.
If you have the budget for wool you can look forward to living with that carpet for 30 or more years.
If you piggy bank is not quite fat enough for wool don't despair. You have other wonderful choices.
How about a wool substitute? Carpeting made from Acrylic yarn is very similar to wool. Some even call it "man made wool". Acrylic carpet resists moisture, fading, mildew, crushing, and staining.
It's not you best choice for high traffic areas, but that's not a problem in most homes.
An old standby is Nylon carpeting. If you have a large family with a lot of coming- and-going Nylon carpet will serve you well. Nylon is one of the most expensive of the synthetic fibers, but it still costs less than wool.
Perhaps you are not familiar with the synthetic yarn called Olefin. Olefin is among the lowest costing materials used for the manufacture of carpet material.
It is a sturdy fiber that is used for both indoor and outdoor carpeting. Olefin has proven to be colorfast, strong and very easy to clean. It's not the best for high traffic areas, because the fiber is easily compressed.
Your carpet knowledge should also include an understanding of the color and patterns of carpet. For example: Light carpeting colors help to create a spacious effect, making your rooms appear to be larger.
The downside is that light color carpeting will show more soil than darker colors.
Homes with pets and children probably call for darker carpeting. There are plenty of beautiful dark colors to choose from.
You don't buy carpet every day, so it's only natural that you don't really know much about the subject. If you go into the carpet buying process without being prepared you will be playing the other person's game.
Now you have a good idea of the rules in the carpet game and you are ready to come out a winner with beautiful carpet that will truly enhance your home.
